Patrick attended his very FIRST audition this week…and got the lead role in his fall school play, Seeds! This will be the first time the play has been performed in the United States. It follows the story of Percy Schmeiser, a Canadian farmer, who battled Monsanto in court over their genetically modified Canola seeds. Playwright Annabel Soutar created this work from the real dialog of the players. She might even make an appearance at the show. Whoa.
I’m blown away by how cutting-edge and ambitious this play is as a choice for a high school theater production. Seeds poses powerful questions…does a corporation have the right to patent life? Should we allow genetically modified organisms in our food supply? What dangers are posed by GMOs? It’s not just the theme that startles me. The amount and depth of the dialog is incredible. Patrick says that the play will be two hours long. He’s learning lines nightly, even now, and watching videos of Mr. Schmeiser to figure out his voice, inflections and mannerisms.
Can you tell I’m bursting-at-the-seams proud of Patrick? Just wait till November, when the play premieres. I might explode with joy.
